Lens types
What we fit, and what each one is for.
We deliberately keep a wide range in stock rather than a single house brand, because the lens that suits your eye is decided by your cornea, not by what we happen to have on the shelf.
Short-sight or long-sight with little or no astigmatism. Dailies for occasional wear, monthlies if you're in lenses most days.
Power varies by meridian, so the lens has to stay rotationally stable on the eye. Fit and stabilisation matter more than the numbers.
Concentric zones give distance and near through the same lens. Takes a week or two of adaptation and usually one power adjustment.
Vaults over a cone-shaped or scarred cornea and holds a fluid reservoir beneath, creating a smooth new optical surface.
Keratoconus and other irregular corneas
When the cornea loses its regular dome shape — through keratoconus, corneal ectasia after refractive surgery, scarring or a corneal graft — spectacle lenses stop being able to help much. The problem isn't the amount of power needed; it's that light entering the eye is being scattered by a surface that is no longer smooth. No spectacle lens can fix a surface irregularity.
A rigid or scleral contact lens can. It bridges over the irregular cornea and holds a thin layer of fluid underneath. Optically, your eye now has a smooth new front surface, and vision that glasses couldn't deliver often becomes possible again.
These fittings are not quick. Expect an initial assessment, a trial lens, a review after wear, and often one or two refinements before the final lens is ordered. That is normal and it is what makes the difference between a lens you wear and a lens in a drawer.
Cosmetic and coloured lenses
We stock them in both plano and prescription powers. One thing worth saying plainly: a cosmetic lens is a medical device sitting on your cornea, exactly like any other contact lens. Buying them unfitted from a shop or a website is how people end up with corneal abrasions and infections. The fitting is free here — there is no reason to skip it.

Redness that doesn't settle, pain, light sensitivity, or vision that suddenly drops. Take the lens out and get the eye looked at the same day — don't wait to see if it improves.

What people ask before their first pair.
Is the fitting really free?
Yes. The trial fitting with a senior optometrist costs nothing, and it includes the teaching session — insertion, removal, cleaning, storage and what to do if something feels wrong. You pay for lenses, not for the fitting.
I was told my astigmatism is too high for contact lenses.
That is often out of date. Toric soft lenses now cover a wide range of cylinder, and where they don't, rigid gas-permeable and hybrid designs usually will. Bring the prescription in and we'll tell you honestly whether it's workable.
Can I wear contact lenses if I have keratoconus?
Usually yes, and often with much better vision than glasses can give. An irregular cornea scatters light in a way spectacle lenses can't correct; a rigid or scleral lens creates a smooth new front surface with a fluid layer beneath it. It takes a longer fitting and more than one visit.
How long does a first fitting take?
Budget about an hour for a straightforward soft lens fitting including the teaching session. Specialised fittings for irregular corneas take longer and are done across several appointments.
Can I sleep in my lenses?
Not unless the lens is specifically approved for it and you have been told to. Overnight wear raises the risk of corneal infection considerably. Orthokeratology is the exception — it is designed to be worn overnight and removed in the morning.
Do you stock coloured and cosmetic lenses?
Yes, in both plano and prescription powers. They still need a proper fitting: a cosmetic lens sits on your cornea exactly like any other lens, and a badly fitted one causes exactly the same problems.
