Fit before fashion

A child's frame has to sit on a bridge that is still developing. Too wide and it slides; too narrow and it marks. We size the bridge and the temple length first, and let your child choose the colour after that.

Materials that forgive

Flexible fronts and sprung hinges absorb the knocks that snap a rigid frame. Paired with an impact-resistant lens material, the whole pair bends where a cheaper one breaks.

Free adjustments, always

Children's glasses go out of alignment constantly. Bring them in whenever — realigning them takes minutes and costs nothing, and a well-aligned frame is the single best protection against the next breakage.

Why we do children's glasses with the clinic, not separately

A child's prescription is rarely just a number to be dispensed. It may be part of managing a squint, a lazy eye, or myopia that is progressing and needs treating rather than simply correcting. The frame choice, the lens centration and the wearing schedule all follow from the clinical plan.

Doing this across two unconnected businesses is where things go wrong — the optical doesn't know why the prescription was written, and the clinic doesn't know what was dispensed. Working alongside the paediatric eye department at Bhaskar EyeCare means the frame and the plan are decided in the same conversation.

If the prescription is myopia and it's changing

Ask about myopia control before you buy an ordinary lens. There are now four evidence-backed approaches to slowing progression, and the earlier a fast-progressing child starts, the more it is worth. We've set out what each one is and what the published trials reported on the myopia lenses page.

Getting a reluctant child to wear them

Three things reliably help. Let them pick the frame — ownership matters more than any argument you can make. Make sure the fit is genuinely comfortable, because most refusal is really discomfort the child can't articulate. And get the first week right; if the glasses pinch or slide, bring them back rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Worth watching for

Signs a child may need testing

  • Sitting very close to the screen or television
  • Squinting or tilting the head to look at something
  • Rubbing the eyes a lot, or complaining of headaches after school
  • Losing their place while reading, or avoiding reading
  • One eye drifting, even occasionally

None of these confirms anything on its own — they're reasons to get the eyes examined, not a diagnosis.

Tree of Sight

Sponsor a pair for a child who needs one

Our frame-donation programme puts spectacles on children in municipal schools. Donate a frame you no longer wear, or sponsor a new one, at either outlet.

Parents ask

Before you bring them in.

My child keeps breaking their glasses. What actually helps?

A flexible front and hinge, a fit that grips properly at the ears, and a lens material that doesn't shatter. Most breakages happen because the frame is loose and gets knocked off, not because the frame was weak. A ten-minute adjustment fixes more than a stronger frame does.

Should children wear polycarbonate lenses?

For most children, yes. It is far more impact-resistant than standard plastic and lighter, which matters on a small face. We'll discuss it as part of the dispensing rather than assuming.

How often should a child's eyes be tested?

Annually as a baseline, and more often if there's a prescription that is changing, a family history of high myopia, or a squint or lazy eye being managed. The examination side runs through the paediatric eye department at Bhaskar EyeCare.

My child says they can see fine. Do they still need glasses?

Children very often don't report blurred vision, because they have nothing to compare it to — what they see is simply what seeing is. That's exactly why school screenings and routine examinations pick up prescriptions the child never mentioned.

Do you do sports frames for children?

Yes, including wrap styles and secured fits. If your child plays contact sport, tell us — the lens material and the frame retention both change.
